About Ph.D. Programme

The Ph.D. Programme at SUN is designed for candidates to solve mainly real time industrial, local, regional, national and inter-national issues/problems. This is a win-win situation for the University and the Industry where the Ph.D. scholar gets exposed to challenging problems which has immediate impact on the industries and societal welfare.

Ph.D. Selection Procedure

The list of all eligible candidates who apply for Ph.D. programme will be displayed on the Institute website. The eligible candidates will be invited for the Written Test (SUN Ph.D. Entrance Test -SUNPET) at SUN Campus

The written examination of SUNPET will be in two stages as mentioned below:

  • Entrance Test Part – I shall consist of research methodology, the syllabus for the same and the model MCQs are available on website. This will be common to all discipline.
  • Entrance Test Part - II shall be discipline specific, such as civil engineering, chemistry, law, physics …etc., the syllabus and the model MCQs for each discipline are available on website.
  • Candidates with visual impairment will have to indicate the impairment in the application form. They will be provided with a scribe for the written test.
  • Candidates who have qualified M.Phil. UGC-NET, JRF, UGC-CSIR, SLET, GATE, CAT etc. are exempted from attending the SUNPET. However, they have to apply by filling the application form along with the application fee and attested copies of necessary documents. They have to appear for personal interview.
    The candidates securing 50% marks in SUNPET (Average of Part-I & II) will be shortlisted for personal interview. The list of shortlisted candidates will be displayed on the SUN website
  • These shortlisted candidates will be required to appear for the personal interview to be conducted on 24th March 2019 where the candidates are required to discuss their research interest/area through a presentation before the RAC. The personal interview shall also consider the following aspects, viz. whether:
    • The candidate possesses the competence for the proposed research.
    • The research work can be undertaken by the university.
    • The proposed area of research can contribute to new/additional knowledge.
  • Research Advisory Committee (RAC) consists of Dean (Academics) as Chairperson and Dean (Research) as Member Secretary and Senior Dean, Senior Head of the Department (of Professor or Associate Professor Level), One Professor/Associate Professor and One Assistant Professor, appointed by Vice Chancellor as members, will prepare the final list of selected candidates by considering the overall merit index of the candidate which will be arrived at by taking into account the candidate’s academic performance and the performance in personal interview. The rubrics for assessment (overall merit index) will be notified on website shortly.
  • The RAC will convene a meeting of all the recognized supervisors of concerned discipline, in which the allocation of Research Supervisor and Co-Supervisor (if required) for a selected research scholar shall be decided depending on the number of scholars per Research Supervisor, the available specialization among the Supervisors and research interests of the scholars as indicated by them at the time of Personal Interview. The Doctoral Committee (DC) consists of Supervisor as Chairperson, Co supervisor (if required) and one external and one internal faculty (of Professor or Associate Professor Level) as members, appointed by Dean of concerned school with approval of Vice Chancellor, will supervise the candidate’s work during the entire Ph.D. program.
  • All finally selected candidates are required to submit the original certificates as mentioned in their application form for verification.
  • The Dean(Research) will forward the list of finally selected candidates, along with the name of supervisors (& co-supervisor, if any) for the approval of the Vice-Chancellor for the provisional registration of the candidates.
  • The Candidates whose registration has been approved by the Vice Chancellor shall be provisionally admitted to the Ph.D. Programme by the Dean(Research) with intimation to the concerned Dean of School, HOD, Supervisor, the Candidate, and the sponsoring industry, if any. The letter of provisional admission shall be issued by Dean (Research) and Registrar.
  • Selected candidates are expected to pay fees (for one calendar year) on the date mentioned in admission letter. The Ph.D. programme will begin by the start of April 2019 or on a date as indicated in the admission letter.

Important Instructions



All full time research scholars will be accommodated in hostel by paying the necessary fees as per norms.


Research Fellows are entitled for a maximum period of 30 days of leave in a year in addition to public holidays. They are not entitled to any other vacations.

Women candidates are eligible for maternity leave of 90 days at full rates of fellowship once during the tenure of their award.

Fees & Fellowship

Tuition Fees

The full time/part time research scholars shall have to pay tuition fee & development fee Rs.99,000 per annum for three and four consecutive years for full time and part time candidates respectively. In addition to tuition fee they shall have to pay caution money deposit (Rs.10000, refundable), examination fees (Rs.3000 per semester) & registration fee (Rs.10000) at the time of admission as per norms of SUN and examination fee, thesis evaluation fee (Rs.30000) as & when applicable.

Research Fellowships

The full time candidates who have passed the NET/SLET/GATE/CLAT/CAT/UGC-CSIR etc. with good percentage/percentile of marks and with good consistent academic record with excellent performance in personal interview may be considered for SUN Research Fellowship (up to Rs.16000 per month and contingency grant up to Rs.25000 per annum). The performance of research scholar, with fellowship shall be critically reviewed in every six months by the RAC for continuance of fellowship. The research scholar can also seek fellowship from different funding agencies such as UGC, CSIR, DBT, DST, ICMR, Industries, Research & Development Organizations etc.

Please ensure your eligibility before applying for program. The Application Processing fees once paid by the candidates will not be refunded, in any case if they are found ineligible for the applied programme.
Candidates must ensure that application is complete in all respects, including fees payment. The incomplete application or application without necessary attachments may not be considered.
Applications received after the due date will not be considered and the application processing fees paid will not be refunded.

Application Fee & Mode of Payment

Rs.750 for SC/ST/Female Candidate & Rs.1500 for others

The application fee shall be paid online through NET banking, Debit Card, Credit Card and other modes as appears.

SUNPET Ph.D. Entrance Test

Venue: O-Building, Sandip University Campus, Nashik

Time: 12:00 AM-02:00 P.M (2 Hours)
