Background

The SWAYAM PRABHA is a group of 40 DTH channels devoted to telecast high-quality educational programs (24x7) using the GSAT-15 satellite. Every day, new content of at least (4) hour’s durations is repeated about 05 times daily, therefore offers a privilege to students which allows them to choose the time of their convenience. The contents are provided by IITs, UGC, CEC, and IGNOU.  

Swayam Prabha And Swayam

Swayam Prabha and Swayam are two different platforms. Swayam Prabha is the name given to a group of 40 DTH channels devoted to telecast educational content whereas Swayam provides online MOOC courses with a provision of certificate / credit-transfer.

How Can a Student avail the Swayam Prabha?

• DTH: 40 DTH channels telecast live on daily basis with every session runs 4 – 5 a day to facilitate students to watch the channel as per their convenience.
• YouTube: All the Swayam Prabha channels are live telecasted on YouTube
• UMANG: Umang; A mobile application can be installed and student can access the Swayam Prabha

Guidelines For The Execution Of Swayam Prabha As Ict Tool At Sandip University Nashik

• Identification of the smart classroom at School / Departmental level
• Identification of 01 – 02 Courses from School / Department
• Identification of topics (in specified format) from selected courses, which would be taught from Swayam Prabha, to be submitted to SUN Swayam Prabha Coordinator
• The SWAYAM PRABHA Session to be run as per the School / Departmental Time Table.
• All SWAYAM PRABHA sessions to be run in Smart classroom and the classroom to be designated as SWAYAM PRABHA Hall
• Assignments to be given to the students based on the Swayam Prabha session
• Attendance and Geotag photos of all sessions should be maintained and a copy of the same to be submitted to the SUN Swayam Prabha Coordinator at the end of the semester

SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active-Learning for Young Aspiring Minds) is an Indian government initiative aimed at providing free online courses across various disciplines. It was launched by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) (now Ministry of Education), Government of India under Digital India to promote digital learning and bridge the educational gap by making quality resources available to students, teachers, and professionals. It is an Indian MOOC platform which provides free entry to web courses, covering all advanced education, High School and skill sector courses. Offers a wide range of courses for school, Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Professional learners, which Includes engineering, Science, humanities, business, management, law, and more.

In SWAYAM all the courses are interactive, prepared by the best teachers in the country and are available free of cost to any learner. More than 1,000 specially chosen faculty and teachers from across the country have participated in preparing these courses.

SWAYAM operates MOOCs learning resources in different ways and structure.

Learning in SWAYAM has four parts / quadrants

• Discussion forums
• Assessment

Nine national coordinators are appointed to manage the course content. Each coordinator is assigned a particular area for maintenance.

• All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has been appointed as National coordinator by MHRD for self-paced (designed to permit learning at the student's own pace) and international courses.
• National Program on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) has been appointed National coordinator by MHRD for engineering sector courses.
• University Grants Commission (UGC) has been appointed National coordinator by MHRD for non-technical post-graduate education.
• Consortium for Educational Communication (CEC) has been appointed National coordinator by MHRD for undergraduate education.
• National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) has been appointed National coordinator by MHRD for school education.
• Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has been appointed National coordinator by MHRD for out-of-school students.
•  National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) have been appointed National coordinator by MHRD for school education.
• Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIMB) has been appointed National coordinator by MHRD for management studies.
• National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research (NITTTR) has been appointed National coordinator by MHRD for Teacher training program.

How to do Credit Transfer?

Academic council of the University or Autonomous institution has to approve the credit transfer. They have to define how many credits for the courses. What kind of courses can be taken by the students.

Recommendations

• Do not implement in final year of degree program
• Ideally start in second semester with English/soft skills course so that students understand what MOOC is.
• Keep the courses that can be taken flexible and open.
• Allow students to do course first and then choose to credit.
• Courses not within college can be taken from NPTEL - programming, data science, new electives.

In Sandip University Nashik we have total 8 (SPOC) local chapters works as SWAYAM/NPTEL coordinators. They were assessed the students to registered for the courses running in every semester in SWAYAM.

Local Chapters

FOSSEE (Free/Libre and Open-Source Software for Education) project promotes the use of FLOSS tools to improve the quality of education in our country. FOSSEE aims to reduce dependency on proprietary software in educational institutions. FOSSEE encourages the use of FLOSS tools through various activities to ensure commercial software is replaced by equivalent FLOSS tools. The FOSSEE project is part of the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India.

The primary objective is to promote the use of free and open-source software in education, research, and innovation.

At Sandip University the FOSSEE Club aims to:

• Promote the use of open-source software among students, faculty, and staff
• Provide training and workshops on open-source software
• Encourage research and development in open-source software
• Collaborate with other institutions and organizations to promote open-source software

The club is open to all students, faculty, and staff of our university, and managed by a team of dedicated members.

Spoken Tutorial is an initiative by the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (ICT) launched by the Ministry of Human Resources and Development (MHRD), Government of India and is being developed by IIT Bombay. The Spoken Tutorial Project is about teaching and learning a particular FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) such as Linux, Scilab, LaTeX, PHP & MySQL, Java, C/C++, LibreOffice etc. via an easy Video tool – Spoken Tutorials.

Dr Pawan R Bhaladhare is working as Central Coordinator for Spoken Tutorial Programs in the Sandip University Nashik.  The school-wise faculty organizers are appointed to look after spoken training programs and certification courses.
